RETOUR EN HAUT
But as a company, Tinder is notoriously coy about how many dates are actually completed. (No surprise—the dating service is often seen as a hookup app.) In a 2016 interview with Business Insider, Tinder CEO Sean Rad said the number of times couples met through the app was "on the low end of the 10-15 range." In a 2015 interview with Fast Company, Tinder's General Counsel told reporter Catrina McGee that there are approximately 20 million matches a day on the app. That's a lot.
A match can occur several ways. A person can swipe right (yes, that's a real feature). The app presents a list of contacts based on the selected criteria (age, location, and gender are on the default list). Swiping left is often a way to pass up a person. People can also choose to see a list of nearby matches, and users can then message others (or remain relatively anonymous).
After a match is made, a series of messages can be exchanged. This can include sending pictures, sending a message, or just commenting on each other's photos. Eventually, people will start to get to know one another better, and relationships can develop. In one study, 28% of people reported that they became friends after meeting through the app. The full study, titled "In Search of Love: Tinder Matching Based on Modern Eros, Marriage, and Divorce," was published in the January issue of the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.
What's good about Tinder? It's pretty intuitive to use. It's also made its users seem at least slightly less creepy than other dating sites and apps. "Tinder is a way to find a partner very quickly and anonymously," Jason Truitt, a professor of human-computer interaction at the University of Washington, told Business Insider in 2015.
Also, Tinder matches are often very diverse. Some of my best matches have been complete strangers, and I've connected with the entire spectrum of races, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. (My only rule is being over 18, though.) Tinder isn't a dating app—it's a hookup app. Some people use it as such. (Right under the "About Tinder" option on the app are a link to a Section-D free hookup site and another link to a paid hookup site.)
